Engineer Belayet Hossain has been appointed as the new Chairman of Chittagong Development Authority (CDA).
The appointment was confirmed on Thursday night through a notification issued by the Contract and Foreign Appointment Branch of the Ministry of Public Administration.
According to the notification signed by Deputy Secretary Golam Robbani, the appointment is made under Section 7(1) of the Chittagong Development Authority Act 2018.
Hossain has been appointed for a one-year term on a contractual basis (Grade 2), effective from the date of joining.
This appointment is subject to the condition that he relinquishes any other profession, business, or working relationships with any government, semi-government, or private organisations and institutions.
The order, issued in the public interest, further states that other terms of this appointment will be determined by the contract agreement.
Hossain is a former joint convener of Chattogram North District BNP and former general secretary of Sandwip Upazila BNP.
During the 17 years of the Awami fascist regime, he reportedly faced numerous attacks and legal cases, resulting in several periods of imprisonment. He was even jailed abroad for participating in party programmes.
A seasoned leader, Hossain began his journey in politics with Chhatra Dal while studying at Chittagong Polytechnic Institute. He later played an active and significant role in BNP politics.
