Bangladesh cricket fans may soon see former captain Shakib Al Hasan back in the national team as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) moves to resolve the legal case filed against him on 5 August 2024.
The board has begun the process of submitting Shakib’s case files to the government, with the aim of clearing all legal hurdles before the upcoming home series against Pakistan in March. BCB director and popular singer Asif Akbar confirmed the development during a recent appearance on DBC News’ “Khelar Adda.”
“There is a file regarding the allegations against Shakib. His lawyer has already communicated with the BCB. Hopefully by Sunday or Monday, we will forward the files to the ministry. After that, it will be the government’s responsibility,” Asif said.
The government has already given its green signal. Youth and Sports State Minister Aminul Haque, who himself faced political challenges after his playing career, has pledged full support to bring back Shakib and other senior players like Mashrafe Bin Mortaza.
Despite some debate over whether it is appropriate to reinstate a player associated with the previous government, Asif Akbar explained that Shakib has publicly expressed remorse and wishes to conclude his career with a proper series. “Shakib has clarified his regret on social media. Recently, I spoke with him in the US, and he wants to play. We discussed his case and legal matters, and the board unanimously wants him back,” Asif said.
BCB vice-president Faruque Ahmed added, “As a cricketer, Shakib needs no introduction. His performances in franchise cricket have been exceptional. If his fitness is maintained, he can play a key role for the national team. He is a brand of Bangladesh cricket.”
Although Shakib will not return this month, there is a strong possibility he will feature in the three-match ODI series against Pakistan, scheduled to begin on 11 March.
