Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has announced that the nationwide “Family Card” initiative will commence within February, initially providing financial assistance to households across the country.

The minister made the announcement while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion meeting held at the Barisal Shilpakala Academy auditorium at 11:30am on Saturday. It was organised by the district administration to mark Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day.

During his speech, the minister emphasised the government’s commitment to building a “new Bangladesh” through the prime minister’s strategic vision.

“Our prime minister has said, “‘I have a plan,’ and we will progress steadily through that plan,” the minister stated, noting that the empowerment of underprivileged women is a central component of this agenda.

The minister explained that the “Family Card” programme has been adopted as a priority. With approximately 41 million families in Bangladesh, the government aims to reach every household, ensuring that the women of the family are the primary owners of the cards.

The initiative will begin with a specific monetary disbursement, with further benefits and opportunities to be added incrementally.
