Bangladesh’s foreign debt stood at about $78 billion as of February 2026, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury told parliament on Tuesday.
Replying to a starred question from independent lawmaker Rumeen Farhana (Brahmanbaria-2), he said “The government’s external debt reached $78 billion based on accounts up to February 2026.

The minister said “The Economic Relations Division (ERD) repays foreign loans on behalf of the government. Each fiscal year, authorities prepare projections to estimate total debt servicing costs, including both principal and interest. The government allocates funds in the national budget accordingly and follows a scheduled plan to repay loans throughout the year.”
In reply to a scripted question from treasury bench member Md Shamsur Rahman Simul Biswas (Pabna-5), the minister said “Bangladesh received $85.99 billion in foreign loans from the 2008–09 fiscal year to 2025–26.”
“During the same period, the government repaid $22.33 billion in principal and $8.70 billion in interest” he added.
Amir Khosru also said the foreign debt stood at $77.28 billion as of 30 December 2025.
From the 2007–08 fiscal year to February of 2025–26, the government borrowed $87.40 billion and repaid $22.05 billion in principal.
“As a result, the country’s foreign debt increased by $65.35 billion during this period,” the minister added.
