Former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been released on conditional bail by a Dubai court, and the Bangladesh government has hired a law firm to seek cancellation of the bail order.
Benazir, who was detained in Dubai following an Interpol notice, was granted three months’ bail with conditions, according to multiple police sources.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed the development on Sunday, saying the government has already engaged a law firm in Dubai to pursue legal action against the bail order.
The minister made the remarks while speaking to journalists after attending an event at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah , Rajshahi.
“I came to know about it while sitting on the stage. I immediately spoke to the home secretary, who then contacted our ambassador in the UAE,” Salahuddin said.
He said the government had appointed the law firm several days ago specifically to handle the matter and instructed it to seek cancellation of Benazir’s bail.
Responding to questions about whether the former police chief had actually been released despite facing several corruption allegations in Bangladesh, the home minister confirmed the information.
Salahuddin said he had been informed that Benazir was granted bail under certain conditions, including a restriction on leaving the UAE. He added that the government was seeking a certified copy of the court order to review the conditions.
“We have instructed our law firm to pursue the cancellation of the bail. We are taking all necessary legal steps and hope to cancel the bail and bring him back at the earliest,” he said.
Benazir Ahmed, a former top police official, is facing several corruption-related cases in Bangladesh.
