The government has commenced the formal process to repatriate former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir confirmed on Sunday.
While addressing reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kabir said the Home Ministry has initiated the necessary procedures and that discussions regarding the matter are currently underway. His remarks followed various media reports suggesting that the former police chief had been released on bail in the UAE.
“If there is progress, you will be informed by the Home Ministry or our Foreign Ministry. You will get an update from the Home Ministry,” the adviser said. He added that as he had just concluded a meeting, it would be premature to discuss details of which he was not yet fully aware.
Benazir Ahmed was previously apprehended in Dubai by UAE police in connection with a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Bangladesh. This development followed the issuance of an Interpol red notice against the former police chief in April 2025.
On 14 June, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed disclosed the details of the arrest to Parliament, noting that UAE authorities had informed the Bangladesh government of the development on 12 June. The Minister characterised the arrest as a “great success” for the Bangladesh Police and expressed the government’s intention to bring him back to the country shortly.
