Bangladesh has expressed a keen interest in strengthening bilateral co-operation with Italy across the fisheries and livestock sectors.
The interest was highlighted during a bilateral meeting between Bangladesh State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku MP and Italian Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Luigi D’Eramo.
The discussion was held on the sidelines of an event hosted at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy.
Both representatives exchanged views on mutual interests and potential co-operation covering fisheries, fish farming, livestock, marine fisheries, and the blue economy.
Highlighting the sector’s crucial contribution to food security, nutrition, employment, and livelihoods in Bangladesh, Tuku announced that farmers in the fisheries and livestock sectors will be brought under ‘Farmer Card’ scheme to receive government facilities.
Reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to building sustainable, climate-resilient, and technology-driven fisheries and aquaculture systems, he noted scope to deepen ties with Italy through advanced technology, research, training, and exchange of experience.
To further expand mutual co-operation in fisheries, livestock, and the blue economy, both nations expressed interest in signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), agreeing to pursue subsequent discussions and necessary administrative procedures at relevant levels.
The meeting was attended by Bangladesh Ambassador to Italy A. T. M. Rokebul Haque, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Md. Saiful Islam, and Economic Counsellor Md. Al Amin. The official release was issued by Senior Information Officer Md. Mamun Hasan.
