A Dhaka court on Sunday imposed a travel ban on Anis Ahmed, the brother of former army chief General Aziz Ahmed, in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation.
Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Faiz passed the order following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Riaz Hossain, the bench assistant confirmed the court’s decision.
ACC Assistant Director Sajal Hossain submitted the application seeking the ban on the departure of Anis Ahmed from the country.
According to the ACC application, an inquiry is currently being conducted into allegations against former army chief General Aziz Ahmed concerning the abuse of power, various irregularities, and corruption.
Aziz is accused of accumulating wealth beyond his known sources of income of his own and family members names.
Additionally, the probe involves allegations of laundering money through banks and hundi to purchase houses and conduct business in Malaysia, Singapore, and Dubai.
The commission informed the court that it had learned that Anis Ahmed, an associate of Aziz Ahmed, was attempting to flee the country.
The anti-graft body argued that the travel ban was essential for the sake of a proper and fair investigation.
