The High Court on Sunday issued a rule against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin over contempt of court.
A High Court bench comprising justices Fahmida Quader and Md Asif Hasan issued the rule, seeking an explanation as to why punitive action should not be taken against the CEC for disobeying court orders. Nasir Uddin has been directed to respond to the rule within four weeks.
Advocate Yunus Ali Akanda represented the petitioner during the hearing. He informed journalists that the High Court had previously directed Nasir Uddin on 27 August last year to dispose of an application regarding the registration of a political party.
However, the CEC failed to implement the court’s directive, leading to the filing of the contempt of court application.
Earlier, Advocate Akanda had submitted an application to the CEC for the registration of a political party named the “Krishak Sramik Janata Party.” He sought legal recourse after the application was not settled.
