A meeting of the Awami League’s central executive committee, chaired by ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, took place on Friday night.
A party organising secretary confirmed that leaders joined the meeting virtually.
Several members of the Awami League central committee and secretariat joined remotely from India and other countries. A number of figures, who are not currently members of the central committee but could take on senior leadership roles in the future, also attended the meeting in Delhi.
The meeting took place while Awami League activities remain banned in Bangladesh. Hasina left Bangladesh for India with her sister, Sheikh Rehana, on 5 August 2024, when a mass uprising brought down her government. She has remained in India since then.
Party sources said the re-organisation of Awami League was a key focus of the meeting, as Hasina prepares for what she has said will be a return to Bangladesh in December to face legal proceedings.
Hasina has previously said that she and other senior party leaders want to return to Bangladesh and appear before the courts.
Leaders also discussed Bangladesh’s current political situation and Awami League’s future course of action, according to party sources.
