A teenager died while recording a video of a procession during BNP rally at the Polo Ground in Chattogram’s Kotwali thana on Sunday afternoon.
Two others also fell ill due to heavy crowd pressure at the rally venue and were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, police and hospital sources said.
The deceased was identified as Saidul Islam Chishti, an eighth-grade student and son of Nazrul Islam Babu, a resident of Enayet Bazar in the city.
Family sources said Nazrul Islam Babu is a member of the party’s central sports committee and previously served as joint convener of the city Krishak Dal, and was also involved with Juba Dal activities.
Witnesses said Chishti suddenly became unwell while filming the procession.
Kotwali thana Swechchhasebak Dal convener Sona Manik told TIMES of Bangladesh that the teenager was recording a video in front of Hall 24 Convention Centre as the procession moved from the Radisson area when he felt dizzy and collapsed.
He was rushed to National Hospital, a private facility, where doctors declared him dead, he said.
Meanwhile, crowd pressure at the rally site caused two other individuals to fall ill.
One of them was identified as Rakib, 25, son of Karim, from the Abdus Mabud Cherang house area in North Mohra under Chandgaon thana, while the identity of the other person, who was rescued unconscious, could not be confirmed immediately.
Sub-Inspector Nurul Alam Ashek, in-charge of the Chattogram Medical College Hospital police outpost, confirmed that the two were admitted around 1pm pm after falling ill due to crowd pressure.
Hospital sources said both were undergoing treatment.
