The Appellate Division on Tuesday rejected a state petition seeking to stay the bail granted to former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque in five cases, including charges of murder during the July uprising.
He will not be released immediately, however, as bail has not been granted in two other cases pending in lower courts.
Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kajal argued for the state, while lawyer Hosne Ara represented Haque.
On 8 March, the High Court granted bail in four cases, followed by another bail order on 11 March in a corruption case filed by the Anti‑Corruption Commission.
The state later appealed to the Appellate Division to suspend those orders. Meanwhile, Haque was shown arrested in two additional cases.
He was arrested from his Dhanmondi residence on 24 July last year and later shown arrested in the case over the killing of Jubo Dal activist Abdul Kaiyum Ahad in Jatrabari during the July 2024 mass uprising.
He also faces a murder case filed with Jatrabari Police Station and verdict forgery cases at Shahbagh and Narayanganj’s Bandar and Fatulla police stations concerning the caretaker government system.
