Atletico Madrid plan to improve Julian Alvarez’s contract to block a summer move after Barcelona contacted the club to assess a potential transfer, with talks emerging ahead of the next window in Spain.
Barcelona have made Alvarez their preferred No.9 option. The club want him to lead a front three with Lamine Yamal and Raphinha. Hansi Flick has requested a striker, and the recruitment team view Alvarez as the closest fit for that role.
Atletico hold a strong negotiating position. Alvarez signed in 2024 for a deal that could reach €95m, and his contract runs until 2030 with a €500m release clause. The club do not need to sell, and they now plan to strengthen their position further.
A source said to ESPN, “Atletico would even be willing to offer him an improved contract until 2032 to avoid an exit this summer.” That stance shows clear intent to retain the player and raises the cost of any potential deal beyond Barcelona’s current reach.
Barcelona face financial constraints. The club currently operate outside LaLiga’s financial fair play limits, which restricts their ability to commit to a high-value transfer. They aim to return within regulations this summer, but they cannot guarantee the required flexibility.
Barcelona believe player intent could influence negotiations. The club reference previous moves, including Antoine Griezmann’s transfer, to support that view. However, Atletico’s contract structure limits leverage unless Alvarez pushes for a move.
Joan Laporta will lead negotiations with Atletico’s sporting director Mateu Alemany. Both figures understand each other’s approach from previous roles at Barcelona, which could streamline discussions but does not change the financial gap.
Barcelona continue to plan for forward line changes. Robert Lewandowski’s contract expires in June, and the club intend to offer reduced terms. Ferran Torres enters the final year of his deal, and the club will consider offers.
Barcelona also assess alternative options. The club hold an option to sign Marcus Rashford for €30m but do not intend to meet that figure. They have also tracked Jan Virgili and Abde Ezzalzouli as part of a wider shortlist.
Arsenal have also shown interest in Alvarez. That interest adds competition but does not change Atlético’s core position, which centres on retention rather than negotiation.
