Bangladesh suffered the biggest defeat in their women’s football history after losing 10-0 against North Korea in their Asian Games opener on Monday.
North Korea controlled the match from the start at Nagai Stadium in Osaka. They scored seven goals before half time and added three more after the break.
Bangladesh could not manage a single shot at North Korea’s goal. The result broke Bangladesh’s previous record for their heaviest defeat. They had lost 9 goals to nil against Thailand in an AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifier in Dhaka in 2013.
North Korea needed only five minutes to open the scoring. Myong Yu Jong found the net before scoring her second five minutes later. Hwang Yu Yong added another goal in the 12th minute. Chae Un Yong then scored twice, in the 18th and 35th minutes.
Kim Kyong Yong struck twice before the break, scoring in the 40th and 43rd minutes. North Korea went into half time with a seven goal lead.
Bangladesh managed to slow down the scoring after the break. However, North Korea remained in full control. Ri Song A scored in the 51st minute. North Korea added another in the 60th minute before Han Jin Hong completed the scoring in the final minute.
Bangladesh coach Peter Butler picked a young starting side for the match. Rituparna Chakma, Monika Chakma, Munki Akter and Shamsunnahar started on the bench. Defender Arpita Biswas made her senior international debut. Mili Akter started in goal.
Butler made his first change in the 23rd minute. Shiuli Azim replaced Arpita. Shamsunnahar later came on in the 69th minute. North Korea went into the match as clear favourites. They are one of the strongest teams in Asian women’s football and have a long history of success at major tournaments.
The two teams had also met at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in March. North Korea won that match 5 goals to nil. This time, Bangladesh conceded twice as many goals as they did in that meeting.
Bangladesh will face South Korea in their next Asian Games match.
