Police recovered an old but unexploded artillery shell from a village in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia on Thursday evening.
The shell was found at the house of the late Asmat Ullah, a retired senior warrant officer of the army, in Daulatkhali village under the upazila headquarters area.
Police said the local army camp was informed immediately after the recovery. The shell was later moved to a safe location under the supervision of the army.
During the operation, announcements were made using loudspeakers to alert residents in the surrounding area.
Artillery shell is a highly destructive munition, usually fired from large cannons or mortar-type weapons to destroy distant targets. Such shells are generally used on battlefields.
Members of the Daulatpur army camp said the bomb disposal unit has been informed to neutralise the recovered shell, and they are expected to defuse it safely at the earliest.
However, until 12pm on Friday, there was no confirmation of the bomb disposal unit arriving at the site.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daulatpur Police Station, Arifur Rahman, said the recovered artillery shell is currently under army custody. Police are providing all necessary assistance, and the situation is being closely monitored.
