Internet service provider Amber IT Limited plans to launch 500 free Wi-Fi zones across Bangladesh to expand access to affordable internet services.
The initiative will allow Amber IT broadband subscribers to use internet services free of charge at designated Wi-Fi zones, the company said in a press release.
The programme has already begun with the launch of Wi-Fi zones at five locations and the company aims to establish a total of 500 such points nationwide within this year.
Amber IT said the zones will be set up gradually at important and crowded locations as well as specialised areas across the country.
Local traders and entrepreneurs will be engaged to operate the points, which will typically be installed at small businesses such as pharmacies, tea stalls and grocery shops.
Amber IT Limited CEO Aminul Hakim said the company’s goal is to make reliable and affordable internet more accessible across the country.
“The Wi-Fi zone initiative will allow people to easily access reliable internet services, while also opening new opportunities for local entrepreneurs,” he said.
Existing Amber IT subscribers will be able to access the service free of charge by connecting to the Wi-Fi zone using the mobile number they registered with the company.
Non-subscribers will also be able to use the service by purchasing coupon cards.
The Wi-Fi points will offer multiple coupon packages, including Tk8 for five hours, Tk12 for one day, Tk66 for seven days and Tk200 for 30 days.
Users will be able to connect to the internet using the code provided on the coupon cards.
The company has already launched Wi-Fi zones at Bibir Pukur Par in Barishal, the Jacob Tower area in Charfesson of Bhola, Sreemangal Railway Station, Shialkol College Road in Sirajganj and the EPZ intersection in Nilphamari.
Amber IT said at least 15 more Wi-Fi zones will be launched this month, particularly before Eid.
The initiative is expected to make internet access easier in crowded public areas for students, travellers, freelancers and other users, while also creating additional income opportunities for small local businesses operating the Wi-Fi points.
