The investigation committee formed over the deaths of six newborns at Ad‑Din Medical College Hospital is yet to submit its report, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain said on Saturday.
He explained that statements from the victims’ mothers could not be collected, so the committee has been given three more days and will submit a full report on 3 June.
The minister was speaking to journalists at the Directorate General of Health Services in Dhaka’s Mohakhali.
“We cannot deliver the report today. I have given the committee three more days because the statements of the bereaved mothers could not be taken. Their accounts will be included in the full report,” he said.
He added that preliminary findings showed the ward’s air‑conditioner was switched off for about two hours between 2am and 4am, with no alternative ventilation available. “Once the investigation is complete, action will be taken in line with the report. No one will be spared,” he also said.
On 27 May, the bodies of the six newborns were handed over to families after they requested no autopsies. A case was filed at Ramna Police Station by one of the families.
Hospital sources said 11 mothers and six newborns were admitted to the post‑operative ward. In the early hours of 27 May, one mother asked nurses to switch off the AC because of cold.
When it was turned back on due to heat, two newborns soon fell ill and were taken to the NICU. Others became sick one by one, and by morning all six infants had died.
