When Sunil Gavaskar made that statement, it did sound like a prediction. The Indian great also called the teenager “God’s gift to Indian cricket” and urging people not to judge him by his age. Andre Russell, one of the most feared power-hitters in T20 history, looked at Sooryavanshi’s batting and admitted that “30-year-old players” are still trying to do what the youngster is doing. AB de Villiers described his game awareness in knockout cricket as “remarkable for someone so young.” Allan Border perhaps made the biggest statement of all when he said he could see “glimpses of Brian Lara” in the left-hander.
Such words are rarely used for a 15-year-old, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did justice to every letter spoken for him. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi finished the tournament with 776 runs at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 237.30. He smashed 72 sixes, scored one century and five fifties, and became the biggest attraction of the season. Every innings felt like an event. Every appearance felt capable of producing something historic.
And more often than not, it did.

Sooryavanshi became the fastest player in IPL history to reach 1,000 career runs in terms of balls faced. He got there in only 440 deliveries. After falling for 97 in the Eliminator, Sooryavanshi followed it up with 96 from 47 balls in Qualifier 2. He became the first player in IPL history to be dismissed in the 90s in consecutive playoff matches.
