Afra Ibnat Khan Iqra, the wife of Bangladeshi television actor Zaher Alvi, has died in what police are treating as a suspected suicide. The incident occurred at a residence in Mirpur DOHS on Saturday, February 28, at around 12:45 pm.
Iqra’s family confirmed the news, with a close relative saying the incident took place at their residence. Her uncle, Bipu Khan, added that he was informed while in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, and that the family was travelling to Dhaka following the incident.
Alvi, who is currently in Nepal shooting an Eid drama titled ‘Dekha Holo Nepale’, confirmed the news on Facebook. “My wife Iqra committed suicide this afternoon at our Mirpur DOHS home. I was shooting in Nepal when I received the news and I am not in a state to speak. I do not understand why she would leave like this without considering me and our children,” he wrote.
He also appealed for privacy and understanding from the public and the media. “I am trying to return to Dhaka as soon as possible. Until then, I ask everyone to give my family and me mental comfort and not to spread any misleading information, for the sake of our child. Please pray for my recovery,” Alvi added.
According to Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge AKM Alamgir Jahan, Iqra was found by family members with a rope around her neck. She was immediately taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors pronounced her deceased. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
Zaher Alvi and Iqra were married on November, 9, 2010. She is survived by her husband and their son, Rijik.
