Southeast University has expressed deep sorrow over the death of nuclear physicist and educationist Professor Dr. M. Shamsher Ali, who served as the university’s founding vice-chancellor.
Chairman of Southeast University’s Board of Trustees Rezaul Karim, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Yusuf Mahbubul Islam and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. Mofazzal Hossain conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the salvation of his departed soul, according to a statement issued by the university.
Dr. Shamsher Ali, who held the distinction of founding vice-chancellor at both Bangladesh Open University and Southeast University, was widely regarded for his pioneering contributions to nuclear physics and science education in Bangladesh.
His academic career spanned decades, during which he authored numerous papers in international journals and received prestigious accolades, including the Hari Prasanna Roy Gold Medal and the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal.
A lifelong advocate for the integration of science, culture and interfaith harmony, Dr. Ali was also known for his outreach through radio and television, aiming to popularise scientific thinking among the public.
He passed away leaving behind a legacy of institutional leadership, scientific scholarship and educational reform that has touched thousands of students, teachers and researchers in Bangladesh and beyond.
