Police arrest city AL leader Shahe Alam Murad

Police on Thursday arrested a city leader of the Awami League party for recently organizing a procession in Dhaka to demand withdrawal of cases against ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Police detained Shahe Alam Murad, an executive member of the Dhaka City Awami League and former General Secretary of the Dhaka South unit of the party, from Uttara area in the morning, said Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan, Joint Commissioner of the DMP’s Detective Branch.

The officer added Alam had led a quick procession on behalf of the Awami League in the capital on April 6. He is facing other six criminal cases.

Leaders and activists of the Dhaka Metropolitan Awami League organized a flash protest in the capital, demanding the withdrawal of cases filed against ousted prime minister Hasina and protesting the arrest of Awami League leaders and activists in the morning of April 6.

The procession began at the south gate of Baitul Mukarram Mosque and ended in front of the party’s central office.

A video of the protest later circulated on social media. Police said, Shah Alam led that procession.

Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government was ousted from power on August 5 in the face of a mass uprising. Since then, many Awami League leaders and activists have gone into hiding or fled abroad, facing multiple cases filed against them.
