A partnership between Beximco Pharmaceuticals PLC and North South University (NSU) is bringing pharmacy students closer to real-world drug research by giving them access to industry facilities, funding support and research topics aligned with pharmaceutical manufacturing needs.
Beximco Pharmaceuticals said in a press release on Friday that the collaboration, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed last year, is aimed at creating opportunities for MPharm students to gain practical research experience and contribute to the development of Bangladesh’s pharmaceutical sector.
Under the agreement, Beximco Pharma has been providing financial support and access to its research facilities for selected NSU students working on thesis projects.
The initiative reflects a growing push among pharmaceutical companies and universities in Bangladesh to create stronger links between academic research and industrial applications, particularly as the sector seeks to build a more skilled workforce and expand its research capabilities.
A ceremony was held at Beximco Pharma’s manufacturing facility in Tongi to mark the submission of thesis projects by two MPharm students from NSU. The event was attended by Beximco Pharma Chief Operating Officer Rabbur Reza and NSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury.
During the visit, a 10-member NSU delegation toured Beximco Pharma’s manufacturing facilities and received briefings on its production operations, quality standards and pharmaceutical manufacturing systems.
The collaboration gives students first-hand exposure to an internationally benchmarked pharmaceutical environment while allowing the company to engage with emerging talent and research aligned with industry requirements.
For Bangladesh’s pharmaceutical sector, which has become a major export-oriented industry, developing local expertise in research and innovation remains an important step towards moving up the value chain beyond traditional generic drug manufacturing.
Beximco Pharma said the partnership is part of its efforts to nurture future talent, strengthen academia-industry relationships and support pharmaceutical research and innovation in Bangladesh.
Beximco Pharmaceuticals is one of Bangladesh’s leading pharmaceutical manufacturers and exporters, with operations in more than 60 countries. Its manufacturing facilities are certified by major global regulatory authorities, including those in the United States, Europe, Australia, Canada, GCC countries and Latin America.
The company was the first Bangladeshi pharmaceutical firm to receive US Food and Drug Administration approval and remains the only Bangladeshi company listed on the AIM of the London Stock Exchange.
With more than 5,900 employees and a portfolio of over 500 products, Beximco Pharma continues to expand its manufacturing capacity and global market presence.
