A Netrokona court has sent 25 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, including its Purbadhala upazila vice president Zainal Abedin, to jail after rejecting their bail petitions in a case filed under several charges, including possession of explosives, burning a motorcycle, causing serious injury and theft.
Netrokona Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Magistrate SM Rajibul Hasan passed the order after a hearing on Wednesday.
Earlier, on 26 May, Jubo Dal leader Omar Faruk of Hogla union in Purbadhala filed the case under the Special Powers Act, Explosives Act and other relevant sections.
In the case statement, Jubo Dal leader Omar Faruk alleged that the accused had threatened Jamaat candidate Masum Mostofa after he was elected as a member of parliament from the Netrokona-5 (Purbadhala) constituency in the last national election.
He further alleged that Masum Mostofa was assaulted at Agia Bazar and his TBS motorcycle was set on fire.
Regarding the case, Jamaat MP from the Purbadhala constituency Masum Mostofa claimed that the case was false.
“During the last Eid-ul-Azha, a dispute emerged between BNP and Jamaat over leasing of cattle markets. Later, the issue was resolved through the intervention of the upazila administration. But BNP leaders and activists deliberately set fire to a motorcycle belonging to one of our workers and filed a false case against our leaders and activists. We have already held a press conference and presented evidence regarding the matter. Even after that, our leaders and activists have been sent to jail instead of being granted bail. I strongly condemn this,” he said.
