SM Masum Billah, the father of Mariam Khatun, has reached a settlement in the case filed over instigating his daughter’s suicide against her husband Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, and two others.

In a deed of compromise submitted to the court, the complainant stated that he lodged the case out of immediate suspicion and holds no objection to the granting of bail to the imprisoned MP or his first wife, Maksuda Islam.

The court has already granted bail to Maksuda Islam.

On Wednesday, Masum appeared before the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah to submit an affidavit on behalf of the accused, where the court recorded his statement.

Dhaka Metropolitan Court Public Prosecutor Omar Farooq Farooqui and defence lawyer Mahbur Rahman confirmed the development. In the deed of compromise, Masum and Md Abdul Hamid Moral are designated as the first party and second party, respectively.

According to the deed, Mariam was married to accused No 1, Gazi Nazrul Islam, and lived cordially with him and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, in a harmonious family environment.

On 20 September 2026, between approximately 3pm and 5:30pm, Mariam committed suicide at their residence in Dhaka. Upon receiving a telephone call from Gazi Nazrul, her father arrived at the residence at around 6:30pm and learnt of her death.

Because the suicide occurred at his son-in-law’s home, Masum Billah immediately filed a case under Section 306 of the Penal Code at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station out of suspicion, naming Gazi Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Islam, and one other person as accused.

The deed specifies that although the case was lodged initially out of suspicion, a compromise has since been reached between both sides, and the complainant’s family has no objection to the defendants receiving bail.

It further states that once the accused are released on bail, both parties will make earnest efforts to maintain warm, cordial, and familial relations. Regarding the sub-judice matter, both sides agreed to remain dispassionate and extend all necessary cooperation to the judicial proceedings.

The deed affirms that both parties signed the document voluntarily, consciously, and without any coercion after fully understanding its contents. The document was formally notarised by a Notary Public on 29 September 2026 and bears the signatures of the first party, second party, and an identifier.
