Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday directed the authorities to introduce automatic traffic light systems at at least 50 more points in Dhaka as quickly as possible.
He issued the directive while chairing a meeting on environmental pollution at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon at around noon, according to the PMO Press Wing.
The meeting discussed measures to curb air and noise pollution, including the use of environmentally friendly technologies in brick production and artificial intelligence to monitor excessive honking in the capital.
Officials also reviewed plans to remove unfit, expired and highly polluting buses, trucks and other vehicles from Dhaka’s roads.
The prime minister stressed the need for swift and effective action to take such vehicles off the streets and improve traffic management in the city.
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam, State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad and the prime minister’s Special Assistant Saimum Parvez attended the meeting.
Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, Additional Police Commissioner for Traffic Anisur Rahman and senior officials from different ministries and agencies were also present.
