Kafura rail crossing in Faridpur Sadar remains without a gate or gateman months after a deadly crash that killed five people, leaving daily commuters exposed to serious risk.
The crossing in Gerda union has long operated without basic safety measures, forcing pedestrians and vehicles to cross the tracks without warning systems or barriers.
Local residents said repeated complaints to the authorities have not led to any visible action.
On 7 January 2025, a train collided with a microbus at the same crossing, killing five people and injuring several others.
Witnesses said the Dhaka-bound train struck the vehicle as it moved onto the tracks, sending it nearly 50 yards away into a nearby pond.
The absence of a gate or gateman was identified as a key cause behind the accident.
A visit to the site found no permanent safety arrangements, with vehicles frequently entering the tracks without prior warning when trains approach.
“Every day we cross the road in fear, as there is no way to know when a train is coming, and a gateman is urgently needed,” said local resident Ohidul Fakir.
“Sudden arrival of trains makes it hard to avoid accidents, and many times we survive by chance,” said autorickshaw driver Hamid Sharif.
“We often stand on both sides of the road to stop vehicles when a train comes,” said tea stall owner Helal Bepari.
“Accidents happen here regularly, yet authorities show no concern even after so many deaths,” said street vendor Rafiq Molla.
“Thousands of vehicles use this road daily, but the risks are ignored, which is very unfortunate,” said vendor Md Haidar Mondal.
Faridpur Railway Station Station Master Prohlad Biswas said the issue of appointing a gateman and maintenance falls under higher authorities.
Railway Sub-Assistant Engineer Mahabub Hasan said letters have been sent multiple times to Pakshi, but no solution has been reached.
Railway Divisional Transport Officer Mosa Hasina Khatun said the crossing may be unauthorised, which is why no gateman is assigned, adding that the matter will be verified and necessary steps taken.
Faridpur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Meshkatul Jannat Rabea said the administration is aware of the issue and will coordinate with railway authorities after inspecting the site.
