A major fire tore through Afil Bricks, a brick kiln in the Hatbila-Jamtala area of Jashore Sadar, on Thursday, injuring a worker and a member of the Fire Service.
Officials said seven Fire Service units battled the blaze for nearly an hour before bringing it under control, though a substantial quantity of materials was destroyed.
Ashraful Haque, manager of Afil Group, said the fire broke out suddenly in Shed No. 2 shortly before Iftar.
He said the flames spread rapidly, engulfing the entire shed and triggering panic among workers and nearby residents.
Firefighters from Jessore Sadar, Bagharpara, Nawapara and Manirampur stations joined the operation.
The fire was contained after about an hour through joint efforts by firefighters, factory staff and local residents.
The extent of financial losses has yet to be assessed.
During the operation, one worker and one firefighter sustained injuries and received immediate treatment.
Afil Group Director Mahabub Alam Lablu said the blaze caused extensive damage to the shed, the control room and the production area.
Jessore Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Jahangir Ahmed said seven units rushed to the scene after receiving the alert on Thursday afternoon.
“We suspect the fire originated from the factory’s upper chimney, but the total loss can only be determined after inspection,” he said.
