Candidates of Jamaat-e-Islami have filed petitions with the High Court’s Election Tribunal challenging the results of the 13th National Parliamentary Election for the Dhaka-6, Dhaka-7, and Gaibandha-4 constituencies.
The petitioners have also sought a court directive for a recount of the votes.
On Thursday, the single High Court bench of Justice Md Zakir Hossain accepted the applications and scheduled the hearing to take place after the upcoming vacation.
The petitions were submitted by Abdul Mannan for the Dhaka-6 seat, Md Enayat Ullah for Dhaka-7, and Md Abdul Rahim Sarkar for the Gaibandha-4 constituency. Their legal counsel, ASM Shahriar Kabir, informed reporters that the court has ordered the authorities to take ballot papers, result sheets, and all other relevant documents into the court’s custody and to store them separately.
According to the official results of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, Ishraque Hossain of the BNP won the Dhaka-6 seat with 78,850 votes, while his nearest rival, Abdul Mannan of Jamaat-e-Islami, secured 54,465 votes.
In the Dhaka-7 constituency, BNP candidate Hamidur Rahman was elected with 1,04,666 votes, defeating Jamaat candidate Md Enayat Ullah, who received 98,483 votes.
For the Gaibandha-4 seat, the BNP-nominated candidate Mohammad Shamim Kaiser was declared the winner with 1,42,772 votes, while his closest competitor, Md Abdul Rahim Sarkar of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, obtained 1,39,738 votes.
