Two shot in B’baria clash over old dispute

Two people were shot and injured in a clash stemming from a longstanding dispute in Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria on Saturday night.

The injured were identified as Ful Mia, 60, and Umme Hani, 22.

The incident took place at Charlapang village in the upazila.

The two were taken to Nabinagar Upazila Health Complex and, after receiving first aid, were transferred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital in critical condition for advanced treatment.

Ful Mia is the son of late Sundar Ali of Charlapang village, while Umme Hani is the wife of Suman Mia of the same village.

Police and local residents said a dispute had been continuing between Ohid Mia and villagers over the construction of a road in Charlapang. Construction of the road was recently completed. The dispute intensified after Muslem Mia of the village bought a tractor to provide ploughing services to farmers on hire.

Locals alleged that Ohid Mia and his brother Obaidul Mia became angry, fearing they would lose their dominance over the tractor rental business.

Tensions had been running high for several days between supporters of Ohid Mia and Muslem Mia over the tractor business.

Locals alleged that, as a result of the dispute, Ohid Mia brought hired attackers from Mirzarchar village in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi and launched an attack in Charlapang on Saturday night. Ful Mia and Umme Hani were shot during the incident and were later taken to hospital by local residents.

Nabinagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Morshedul Alam Chowdhury said police had received reports of gunfire over a dispute about establishing dominance in the area.

“Two people were injured in the incident. We are looking into the matter. Necessary legal action will be taken if a complaint is filed,” he said.
