Bakery owner jailed, fined in Kishoreganj food safety case

A court in Kishoreganj has sentenced a bakery owner, Md Shamim, to one year and six months of rigorous imprisonment for producing and selling food in unhygienic conditions and using dyes harmful to human health in Bajitpur upazila.

The court also fined him Tk3 lakh, in default of which he will have to serve an additional three months of simple imprisonment.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Fakhrul Islam of Kishoreganj Pure Food Court delivered the verdict on Wednesday afternoon.

According to court sources, a drive was conducted on 26 July 2025 in Sararchar area of Bajitpur upazila under the Safe Food Act. A joint team comprising a safe food officer, district safe food inspector, and members of the police, RAB, and Ansar took part in the raid.

At around 12pm, when the raiding team went to inspect Sun Bakery and Satata Bakery – both owned by Md Shamim – he fled the scene.

During the subsequent raid at Sun Bakery, officials found clear evidence of food production and sales in unhygienic conditions alongside the use of colouring harmful to human health.

Following the operation, a case was filed against Md Shamim. After continuous trial hearings, the court pronounced its judgment on Wednesday.

The court sentenced Md Shamim to one year of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Tk3 lakh, with an additional three months of simple imprisonment in default of payment.

Besides, he was awarded a further six months of rigorous imprisonment. Consequently, his total sentence across both sections stands at one year and six months of rigorous imprisonment.
