The prosecution is set to file formal charges soon with the International Crimes Tribunal against several heavyweight leaders and former ministers of the Awami League, whose activities have been banned, including party presidium member Amir Hossain Amu.
The charges will be filed over crimes against humanity committed during the July Uprising.
International Crimes Tribunal prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim spoke to reporters about the matter on Sunday.
He said that, following a lengthy investigation, the prosecution had received investigation reports against several former MPs and ministers of the Awami League government. Formal charges were prepared after the reports were scrutinised. Tamim said the charges would be filed with the tribunal soon, subject to the approval of the chief prosecutor.
The list includes former shipping minister Shajahan Khan, former civil aviation and tourism minister Lt Col (retd) Faruk Khan, former agriculture minister Abdur Razzaque, ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s former adviser on power, energy and mineral resources Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury and former minister Dipu Moni.
The prosecution said several others were also on the list. All of them are currently in prison.
