Four passengers of a battery-run auto-rickshaw, including three members of the same family, were killed and five others injured after a speeding bus collided with the vehicle in Bhanga upazila in Faridpur on Friday.

The deceased family members were identified as Nurunnahar Begum, 45, of Purba Sadardi village; her daughter, Rimu Akter, 23; and Rimu’s two-and-a-half-year-old son, Md Raihan. The fourth victim, a man over 50, could not be identified.

The accident occurred around 12pm in the Purbo Shadradi area on the Faridpur–Bhanga–Barishal highway.

Police said the auto-rickshaw was travelling from Bhanga toward Tekerhat through Chumurdi Union when the bus, approaching from the opposite direction at high speed, struck it head-on, leaving three passengers dead on the spot.

Seven others, among them two children, were injured and taken to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex. Later, a child succumbed to injuries after being brought to the health complex.

Dr Ganesh Chandra Saha, an emergency physician at the health complex, confirmed the fatalities, adding that four of the injured had been transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for specialised care.

Bhanga Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Rokibuzzaman said the bodies have been recovered and the injured sent for treatment.
