A farmer was shot dead and a tea seller injured by armed attackers in Bheramara upazila of Kushtia on Friday night.
The attack took place around 8pm in the Rayta Pathorghata area of Bahadurpur Union.
The deceased was identified as Refajul Islam, 40, son of Jamaat Ali, and a resident of the locality.
According to police and local residents, Refajul was standing outside a shop when several armed men approached and fired at him at close range. He died on the spot.
During the attack, Lalon Mondal, 50, a nearby tea seller, was also attacked with a sharp weapon. He was later taken to Bheramara Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Anik, Lalon’s elder son-in-law, said his father-in-law had been selling tea at the spot while his son was fishing nearby. “As he went to bring his son home, the assailants struck him with a sharp weapon, leaving him injured,” he said.
Dr Ekramul Haque, the residential medical officer at Bheramara Health Complex, said Lalon Mondal had sustained multiple cut wounds to his head and body but showed no signs of bullet injuries. “He is currently out of danger,” he confirmed.
Delwar Hossain, additional superintendent of police for the Bheramara Circle, said one person had been shot dead in the incident. “We suspect this was a pre-planned attack. The identities of the attackers have not yet been confirmed. Police are investigating,” he added.
