A clash between two groups in Durgapur village of Ashuganj upazila, Brahmanbaria, over a football game has left over fifty people injured. During the clash, both sides’ houses were vandalised and set on fire.
The conflict began on Friday morning between the residents of Baro Bari and Munshi Bari in Durgapur village, near Durgapur market. The clash, which started at 9am, lasted for almost two hours, until 11am, injuring more than fifty people. The injured were rescued and admitted to the district hospital and various local clinics.
According to police and eyewitnesses, the dispute began on Thursday afternoon at Durgapur High School ground, where youth from Baro Bari and Munshi Bari had a heated argument and scuffle over a football game. Later that night, a confrontation occurred between the two groups, which was controlled by the police.
On Friday morning, around 9am, both sides, armed with local weapons, clashed again. During the two-hour-long fight, both sides’ houses were vandalised and set on fire.
Upon receiving the news, the police arrived at the scene and attempted to control the situation. Later, a team of army personnel, led by Ashuganj Upazila Executive Officer Rafe Mohammad Chhara, arrived and helped restore order.
Inspector Abu Hena Mohammad Mustafa Reza of Ashuganj police station confirmed that the situation was under control and additional police forces had been deployed to the area.
Upazila Executive Officer Rafe Mohammad Chhara stated that after the police intervened, the army arrived, and peace was restored in the area. The situation is now calm.
