In a strategic move ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, five candidates have stepped down from the race in Dhaka-17 constituency, pledging their support for BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman.
Abdus Salam, chief coordinator of the BNP Election Steering Committee for Dhaka-17, announced the decision on Wednesday during a press briefing at BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan.
He said that the candidates had decided to step aside in favour of Tarique Rahman’s campaign.
The five candidates who have withdrawn are – Abul Kalam Azad (Television symbol); Kazi Enayetullah (Rooster symbol); Md Rashed Ahmed (Pineapple symbol); Shamim Ahmed (Coconut symbol); Manjur Humaun (Apple symbol).
Abdus Salam stated that two candidates – Tupu Raihan (Bicycle symbol) and Manjur Humaun (Apple symbol)-could not attend the briefing as they were not in Dhaka.
However, both candidates have given their full support to Tarique Rahman and his “Sheaf of Paddy” symbol over the phone.
Kazi Enayetullah had earlier announced his withdrawal from the race in favor of Tarique Rahman.
Abul Kalam Azad, who was contesting under the Television symbol, said, “It is essential to ensure the victory of patriotic nationalist forces. We cannot allow any forces that aim to take Bangladesh backward to succeed. We must move forward, correcting past mistakes.”
Shamim Ahmed, contesting under the Coconut symbol, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “I am here to support the slogan ‘Bangladesh First.’ I ask my supporters to cast their votes for the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’, as we do not want anti-national forces in power.”
This move highlights a growing unity within the BNP as the party strengthens its position for the upcoming election in Dhaka-17, signaling a collective effort to back Tarique Rahman’s candidacy.
