4 killed in separate road accidents in Dhaka

Four people were killed and two others injured in two separate road accidents in different parts of the capital on Friday night.

In Science Lab area, a man and his daughter died after being run over by a sand-laden truck.

The deceased have been identified as Saju Akter Suman, 47 and his daughter Sumaiya Akter, 20.

The tragic incident occurred around 10:45pm in the Science Lab area when Saju and Sumaiya were riding a motorcycle. Local witnesses reported that a sand -laden truck hit the motorcycle from behind.

They fell onto the road, and the truck subsequently ran over them. Police reached the scene and rushed the victims to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where they were declared dead by doctors.

Locals managed to seize the truck and apprehended the driver, who was handed over to the police.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Mahmudul Hasan of New Market Police confirmed the deaths.

Authorities said the victims lived in South Shahjahanpur. Sumaiya was an honuors student at a private university, while her father worked as an office assistant at the Public Works Department. The duo was returning home after Eid shopping at New Market when the fatal accident occurred.

In the second incident, a CNG auto-rickshaw lost control and collided with an island near the Channel I office in Tejgaon around 10:30pm.

The driver, Alim, 50, and his passenger Harunur Rashid Sani, 32, were critically injured in the crash. Both were declared dead at DMCH.

Two other passengers in the auto-rickshaw, Borshi Akter, 26, and Happy, 21, were injured and are receiving medical treatment at the hospital.

According to Naeem Hasan, a relative of Sani, the family was originally from Dashkahania village in Kishoreganj’s Kotiadi Upazila but currently resides in Mohakhali area.

Sani worked at a company in Banani. The family had been out shopping for Eid and was heading home in the CNG auto-rickshaw when the accident occurred.

After the crash, passersby rushed the victims to the hospital, but doctors confirmed the deaths of Sani and the driver.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed the deaths and said that the bodies were sent to the morgue for post-mortem.

The identities of the driver, Alim, remain unclear. The two injured passengers are currently under treatment.
The Tejgaon Industrial Area Police is investigating the incident.
