A street boy was killed after being attacked with a piece of glass during an argument over drug use in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area on Friday night.
The victim, Moyejul, also known as Kalu, 16, was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 9:30pm in critical condition.
Doctors on duty declared him dead upon arrival.
According to Amin, a friend of the victim, the incident occurred near the rail crossing in front of Hotel Sheraton, where a group of street children had gathered. A dispute arose between Moyejul and another street boy, Hamidul, over the use of a drug locally known as “dandy.”
During the confrontation, Hamidul allegedly struck Moyejul on the left side of his neck with a shard of glass, causing critical injuries.
Amin and other street children rushed Moyejul to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead by doctors.
Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the police camp at DMCH, confirmed the death and stated that the body has been kept in the hospital morgue for post-mortem.
The accused, Hamidul, is currently in police custody, and the Tejgaon Police Station has taken up the investigation.
