Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBN) has detained three individuals with approximately 74 bhori of gold jewellery at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Superintendent of Police Mohammad Rezaul Kabir of Airport Armed Police Battalion provided the details on Friday.

The detainees have been identified as Md Nasir Molla, 40, Sohag Sheikh, 24, and Md Hasan Miah, 23.

According to APBN, the three individuals were spotted moving suspiciously on the footpath on the north side of the airport roundabout late on Thursday night. They attempted to flee upon sensing the presence of police, but were subsequently apprehended.

A search of their bodies was later conducted, leading to the recovery of 21 and 22-carat gold jewellery weighing a total of 861.8 grams. According to police estimates, the approximate market value of the recovered gold jewellery is Tk1,36,86,160.

Police claimed that during initial interrogation, the detained individuals said the gold jewellery was brought into the country through unidentified passengers from various countries for the purpose of smuggling.

It was also preliminarily learned that they have been involved in gold smuggling at the airport for a long time.

In connection with the incident, a case was filed at Airport Police Station on Friday. Police said the case against the detained persons was registered under the Special Powers Act, 1974.
