The prosecution has filed formal charges with the International Crimes Tribunal against five police officers, including former Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) chief Md Asaduzzaman, over the alleged abduction, torture and killing of a madrasa principal in Gazipur.
Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said the charges were submitted to the registrar’s office of the tribunal on Wednesday.
The other accused are then ADC Ishtiaq Ahmed, police inspector Md Asaduzzaman Mia, police inspector Md Mezbah Uddin Ahmed and SI Touhidul Islam Sumon.
According to the prosecution, CTTC members picked up Maulana Abul Hossain Al-Amin, principal of Ibn Masud Madrasa in Gazipur, on 30 January 2023, for allegedly criticising policy decisions of the Awami League government.
He was allegedly kept at the CTTC office on Minto Road in Dhaka until 17 February, according to the complaint.
The prosecution alleged that Al-Amin was subjected to physical and mental torture for 18 days under the leadership of then ADC Ishtiaq Ahmed, leaving his physical condition critical.
The complaint says Al-Amin was taken to Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital on 18 February, where he died.
The prosecution alleged that the accused police officers subsequently concealed his body to cover up the alleged killing.
According to the complaint, his body was allegedly thrown into the Dhaleshwari River from Tulshikhali Bridge in Lakshmichar area of Keraniganj, Dhaka.
