Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard have arrested a poacher along with nine maunds of venison, three deer skins, and a deer head in Patharghata upazila of Barguna.

The arrested poacher was identified as Md Ibrahim, 48.

Lieutenant Md Salman Bin Shawkat, media officer of the Bangladesh Coast Guard South Zone, confirmed the matter on Friday afternoon.

According to Coast Guard sources, acting on a tip-off, a team from Patharghata Coast Guard conducted a drive in the Kaliyar Khal area of Patharghata upazila around 2am on Thursday.

During a search for a wooden boat, officers recovered nine maunds of venison, three deer skins, and one deer head, and arrested Ibrahim.

The Coast Guard stated that the estimated illegal market value of the seized venison is Tk4,20,000, while the three deer skins are valued at Tk3,000 and the deer head at Tk1,000. The wooden boat used in the poaching operation was also seized.

For further legal proceedings, the arrested individual along with the seized venison, skins, head, and wooden boat were handed over to the Patharghata Upazila Forest Department.

Shawkat said legal action has been taken through the Forest Department, adding that the Coast Guard will continue such operations in future to safeguard forest resources.
