Three accused have given confessional statements in court in the case filed over the killing of Special Branch (SB) Sub-Inspector Altaf Hossain in Savar’s Aminbazar.

A Dhaka court also placed two other accused on five-day remand for questioning in the case on Thursday.

Investigation Officer SI Zakir Al Ahsan of the Aminbazar Police Camp under Savar Model Police Station produced the accused before the court.

Accused Zohurul, Apon and Jihad agreed to make confessional statements.

Following an application by the investigation officer, Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohag recorded the statements of Zohurul and Apon, while Judicial Magistrate Tanvir Ahmed recorded Jihad’s statement.

The three were subsequently sent to jail, said Abu Bakkar Siddique, an assistant sub-inspector of the prosecution department.

The two accused placed on remand are Kashem Ali and Dadi Al Fayet Jeet.

Police arrested Kashem from the Baraitali-Sagarnal area of Moulvibazar Sadar on Tuesday afternoon and Jeet from Amratali in Cumilla Sadar.

They were produced before the court on Wednesday, when the investigation officer sought 10 days’ remand for each.

The court sent them to jail and fixed Thursday for the remand hearing. Senior Judicial Magistrate Ayesha Siddika later granted five days’ remand for both.

Earlier, the court granted five-day remand to Alauddin, Md Apan, Md Jihad, Imran Hossain, Noor Mohammad Rudra and Golam Rabbi, while Billal and Delwar were placed on three-day remand.

The court had also granted five-day remand to prime accused Zohurul on Monday. Rakib Mia, Sabbir Ahmed and Wasim were placed on three-day remand.

According to the case statement, an altercation broke out on the evening of 5 September over the parking of an autorickshaw in front of Abul Kalam Azad’s autorickshaw garage in Bardebi West Para, Savar.

SI Altaf Hossain went there to intervene but allegedly came under attack. He later took shelter at his son’s business establishment, Grand Fashion.

At around 8:10pm, the accused allegedly attacked him there with rods, pipes, hammers and sticks.

When Altaf’s son Ariful Islam tried to intervene, he was also allegedly hacked and injured.

The attackers allegedly vandalised the business establishment, causing damage worth around Tk5 lakh, and took Tk2.20 lakh, according to the case statement.

The injured Altaf was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His son was admitted in critical condition.

Altaf’s wife, Shiuly Parvin, filed the case with Savar Model Police Station on the same day, naming 15 people as accused.
