A man who was allegedly set on fire after two people poured petrol on him in his front yard in Muktagachha, Mymensingh, died at a hospital on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Farhad Hossain Jony, 35, son of Abdus Sattar of Moushadia village in Muktagachha upazila.
Quoting Farhad’s family, Quamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Muktagachha Police Station, said two people suddenly entered the yard of his home in the municipal area around 10pm on Wednesday and set him on fire after pouring petrol on him.
Farhad was initially taken to Muktagachha Upazila Health Complex. He was later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he died around noon on Thursday from his burn injuries.
Farhad had been living in a dilapidated house beside the remains of an abandoned royal palace in the municipal area.
Locals said drug users frequently gathered near the house and that Farhad had often tried to stop such gatherings.
“The incident is being investigated with utmost importance,” said OC Quamrul Islam.
