Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested three more people, including the prime accused, in connection with the attempted murder of Mohammad Rezwan, a member of the organisation July Rebels, in the capital.
The arrestees are alleged top-listed criminal Altaf Hossain, alias Thotkata Altaf, 46, Saiful Islam, 37, and Md Amir Hossain Firoz, 47.
They were arrested at around 2:45am on Tuesday from the BSCIC Industrial Area under Tongi East Police Station in Gazipur, RAB officials said.
Confirming the arrests, RAB-1 Senior Assistant Director (Media) Additional Superintendent of Police Md Rakib Hasan said Altaf is the main accused in the case and has 14 criminal cases filed against him at various police stations in the capital. The three have been handed over to the concerned police station for further legal proceedings.
Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested two other suspects, Md Masum and Md Fahim Khan, around 5:30am on Sunday in separate drives related to the same case.
The attack took place on Saturday around 7:30pm in front of the July Rebels’ head office at Muktijoddha Market in Sector 6 of Uttara.
According to police, Altaf and several associates assaulted Rezwan with intent to kill, struck him on the head, vandalising the organisation’s office.
The injured Rezwan was taken to a private hospital, where he received treatment.
Following the incident, Rezwan filed a case of attempted murder with Uttara East Police Station. Law enforcement agencies subsequently launched operations in different parts of the capital and surrounding areas, leading to the arrests.
