At least 20 people, including two journalists, were injured during clashes linked to the inter-department football tournament final at Jagannath University on Thursday.
The injured journalists are Rakibul Islam Rakib, a campus correspondent of The Daily Star, and Limon Hossain of Dainik Amar Desh. The identities of the other injured could not be confirmed immediately.
The incident occurred around 1pm at the university’s central playground in Dhupkhola following the final match between the Department of Islamic Studies and the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism.
According to eyewitnesses, the match ended in a draw in regular time and went into a tie-breaker, where the Department of Islamic Studies won 3–0.
Tensions flared after the match, leading to an argument between students of the two departments that later escalated into physical clashes.
Several injured individuals were taken to nearby hospitals for primary treatment.
The situation was later brought under control after students from other departments and university authorities intervened.
