In the 13th parliamentary election, 18 inmates at Panchagarh District Jail are set to cast their votes using postal ballots. This group of voters include 12 convicts and six arrestees.
According to documents, two of these voters are residents of Dinajpur and Bogura districts, while the rest belong to Panchagarh. Notably, all 18 inmates are male, as there are no female inmates participating in this balloting process.
Jailer Akhirul Islam shared this information on Monday, saying the registration process for these inmates has been completed.
He further detailed that the prison currently houses a total of 356 prisoners, which includes 67 convicts, eight women, and six foreign nationals. In addition to the inmates, 55 officials and employees of the district jail are also scheduled to vote via postal ballot.
To ensure a proper voting environment, a secret booth will be established inside the prison premises. Expressing his enthusiasm for the initiative, Havildar Merajul Islam, who has served for 37 years, said this will be his first time to cast a vote while on duty. “I am very happy to think about it,” he said.
Providing a broader perspective on the district’s election preparations, Kazi Md Saemuzzaman, Panchagarh district returning officer and deputy commissioner, announced that a total of 8,069 voters in the district have applied for postal ballots. This figure includes 2,130 female voters and 5,939 male voters.
