Police detained 13 youths on Wednesday morning following an attempt to forcibly occupy land belonging to a Hindu family in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga. The incident took place at Bashbaria village.
According to local sources, a group of outsiders arrived at the village near the Shwashan Ghat area on five motorcycles and a tractor. To create panic, the group exploded four crude bombs, locally known as cocktails.
They allegedly used the tractor to plough over around two bighas of land, destroying a standing crop of green chillies.
As the family members began to scream for help, local villagers gathered and mounted a collective resistance. The villagers chased the attackers and managed to detain 13 members of the group before alerting the authorities.
Confirming the incident, Alamdanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bani Israel said he arrived at the scene with a police force at about 10am. The 13 individuals detained by the villagers were taken into police custody, and the five motorcycles and the tractor were seized.
The OC added that the situation in the area is currently calm and that legal action against those involved in the land grabbing attempt and the cocktail explosions is currently under process.
