The measles situation in Bangladesh continues to worsen, with 12 more deaths reported across the country in the last 24 hours.
According to the latest data from the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), one person died from laboratory-confirmed measles and 11 from suspected measles between 8:00am on 6 May and 8:00am on 7 May.
During the same period, 1,238 suspected measles cases and 286 confirmed infections were recorded.
The total number of confirmed measles deaths has now risen to 57, while suspected deaths stand at 279.
Dhaka Division continues to record the highest numbers of both deaths and infections.
According to the DGHS press release, the total number of suspected measles cases recorded between 15 March and 7 May reached 45,498, while laboratory tests confirmed infections in 6,208 people.
Divisional statistics show that Dhaka Division reported the highest number of suspected cases in the last 24 hours, with 508 patients identified and 193 confirmed infections. Among other divisions, Chattogram recorded 251 new cases, Rajshahi 173, and Khulna 87.
The release said a total of 28,238 patients have so far been discharged from hospitals.
To contain the outbreak, the nationwide “National Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign 2026” has been intensified.
A vaccination update released on the evening of 6 May said that since the campaign began on 5 April, a total of 172,689,080 people have been vaccinated, reaching 101 per cent of the target.
In the last 24 hours alone, 404,173 children received the vaccine nationwide.
Among city corporation areas, Gazipur City Corporation achieved the highest coverage at 141 per cent of the target, while Sylhet City Corporation recorded comparatively lower coverage at 91 per cent.
