Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has called for the immediate enforcement of the verdict against Sheikh Hasina, demanding that the ousted prime minister, currently taking refuge in a neighbouring country, be brought back to Bangladesh within a month.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday afternoon, Nahid Islam congratulated all participants of the July uprising following the announcement of the death sentence.
Commenting on the verdict, he said, “This is a milestone in Bangladesh’s judicial history. Today, we have received justice for all matters. The NCP welcomes the death sentence for Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity. However, we will not be satisfied until the sentence is fully enforced. Only then will the families of the injured and the martyrs of July find peace.”
Urging swift implementation, he added, “Sheikh Hasina must be brought back to the country and the sentence carried out within a month. This verdict will stand as a landmark precedent worldwide.”
Nahid Islam also acknowledged the role of all political parties, as well as the families of the injured and martyrs, and the July uprising fighters in securing the historic verdict.
“However, the Awami League must also face justice as a party. Through judicial proceedings for crimes against humanity, we will see the Awami League held accountable on Bangladeshi soil,” he said.
He further emphasised the need for unity to ensure that future judicial processes are not obstructed, including during post-election periods, and called on all to work together to prevent any disruptions to the tribunal’s work.
