A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed Mahfuzur Rahman Mita, former member of parliament for the Chattogram-3 (Sandwip) constituency and executive member of activities banned Chattogram North Awami League, on a six-day remand in an anti-terrorism case.
His personal car driver, Golam Mawla Salim, was also remanded for five days in connection with the same case.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order following a hearing after the suspects, who were identified during the investigation, were produced before the court.
The Investigating Officer, Police Inspector Md Masudur Rahman of the Detective Branch (Tejgaon Division), produced the accused in court and petitioned for a 10-day remand in the case filed with Tejgaon Industrial Zone Police Station.
During the hearing, state lawyer Omar Farooq Farooqui presented arguments in favour of the remand request. Conversely, defence lawyer Md Atiqur Rahman Khan filed a bail petition seeking the cancellation of the remand prayer. The court issued the remand order upon hearing both sides.
In the remand application, police said that the accused, aiming to create instability in the country, organised an illegal procession, chanted anti-state slogans, and detonated crude bombs in the area adjacent to the Mohakhali Bus Terminal alongside leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League.
Police added that intensive interrogation is required to uncover the main plan behind the terrorist activities, gather the names and addresses of other absconding suspects to arrest them, and locate the source of the illegal crude bombs in their possession.
According to the case details, leaders and activists of the activities banned Awami League and its associate organisations brought out an illegal procession and exploded crude bombs near the Mohakhali Bus Terminal under Tejgaon Industrial Zone Police Station at 9:50am on 18 June.
The duo was shown arrested in the Anti-Terrorism Act case over the incident before being sent on remand on Tuesday.
Police also noted in the Previous Conviction and Police Record (PCPR) section of the remand application that accused Mita faces three other cases in Chattogram.
