A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted a petition to send Maksuda Islam, the first wife of Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, to jail following the completion of a one-day remand in a case filed over the abetment of suicide.
Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Faruq Hossain Faruqi confirmed the matter, noting that she was not produced in court.
The investigating officer Mohammad Salauddin of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) submitted the petition seeking her detention in jail upon the expiry of her remand.
In the petition, the investigating officer stated that crucial information had been obtained during interrogation and requested that she be detained in jail until the investigation concludes.
The petition was scheduled for a hearing in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain, as confirmed by Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam.
Earlier on Monday, the court granted a one-day remand for Maksuda and a four-day remand for lawmaker Gazi Nazrul in the same case.
On Sunday, police recovered the hanging body of Mariam Khatun, 19, the second wife of the lawmaker, from a flat in NAM Bhaban in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.
Following the recovery, Mariam’s father, Md Masum Billah, filed the suicide abetment case as the plaintiff, naming lawmaker Gazi Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda, and his brother-in-law Obaidur Rahman as the accused.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), allegations of physical and mental torture were brought against the accused.
The FIR also noted the recovery of a suicide note written by Mariam from the residence.
